The 1st responsibility of journalism is to present both sides of issues & particularly giving spokespersons from each side equal space to present their perspective. When is the last time in colonial history & oligarch owned media (6 family corporations own 90% of US Media).
I'm continually shocked at how no mainstream media or social media particularly digital web-media, have formal 'dialectic' ('both-sided') policies & programs in place to facilitate formal 'debate' (French 'de' = 'undo' + 'bate = 'the-fight') among writers, readers, commenters etc. New media start-up complaining about censorship, but then never commit to nor implement 'dialectic-rights' to raise issues or challenge what has been written. I know of no media who have committed to such policy.
Dialectics & Debate can completely replace censorship. When opportunity is provided for the public to achieve context-appropriate, reasonable, fair & balanced recourse for what they perceive, accuse or malinger as: Slander, Defamation or libel, then courts can be expected to defer their involvement. All humanity's worldwide 'indigenous' (Latin 'self-generating') ancestors cultivated Council-Process at all levels (family, multihomes, village, city, region, state, confederacy, continent & hemispheric council) of society so that anyone could call for a Both-sided, Equal-time & witnessed (now recorded) dialogue for both positive reasons such as pursuing collaborative research or for negative reasons of Conflict-Resolution. Indigenous societies by providing Council Process facilitated the experiential training of each person in dialectic expression. As a compromised oligarch directed & owned society, we do not have direct recourse to such as propaganda & indoctrination, until we re-establish dialectics council & hearings among ourselves at every level.
Whenever there's conflict both at home & worldwide, we've two main choices to: 1) believe the finance-media-religion-education-military-industrial-legislative-complex, demonize the other, armour ourselves against our perceived enemies, launch pre-emptive war & create hell, 2) engage the other in formal equal-time recorded & published dialogues. Mohandas Gandhi developed 'Satyagraha' (Hindi 'truth-search') based upon simultaneous inquiry with both parties in dispute or re-search asking, "What are your best intentions & how can we help you fulfill these?". Gandhi, "I can imagine a fully armed man to be at heart a coward. Possession of arms implies an element of fear, if not cowardice. But true non-violence is an impossibility without the possession of unadulterated fearlessness."
We need transparency in all levels of human solutions at home, school, media, business for all stakeholders. As Socrates proposed, dialectics (both-sided inquiry) should be the foundation of social & economic literacy both for collaborative-research & as necessity may arise for conflict-resolution.

Capitalism is driven and powered by greed, those plutocrats indeed have vested interest to perpetuate the prevailing Socio-economic-political architecture, but the masses have become the back-bone of this order.
What 'enables' the masses to this position? Indeed, it is the greed. It is due to it that masses have also become the class that have a vested interest in perpetuating this architecture.
I think the number of Americans suffering right now and receiving insulting responses from our government could get us to a tipping point. If not, I don't know what will.
I've been a big fan of yours for a few years now, but I just don't see the American public "waking up" and doing anything. I just don't see it. Like Morris Berman said, what if the wool is their eyes? Americans are either too craven or too invested in the system to resist.
Without knowing enough to say whether "pretty much everything ever said by ... every other US secretary of state ... is an absolute lie" -- and finding such absolute, dramatic language to be problematic in such an important context -- I agree wholeheartedly that the recent US airstrikes in Syria were unauthorized, as well as with Caitlin's assessment that modern US foreign policy is predicated on speaking for a consent that the people never gave. As for prophecies, who of us can say whether change is imminent? Genuine prophecy rarely admits to exact dates, I think, and is therefore incompatible with predictions in time.
