I just read in another MSM rag (The Guardian) that NASA just slammed a rocket into some asteroid to test the potential for deflecting the path of threats to earth from rogue heavenly bodies. It was accompanied by celebratory language by a spokesperson who opined that “all earthlings should sleep better.” This mentality — that we’re saved by exploding hi-tech crap — is exactly why we find ourselves stewing in this rubbish soup. We are such bloody babies, unable to cope with the reality that trying to protect ourselves from a low-probability event, while unable to do anything about the high-probability demise of the biosphere is the height of diversion denial. As is the idea that a nuclear war, any war for that matter, is "winnable."

Biden’s foreign policy can be summarized in one word: empire.

The same can be said for the NYT. The only question is how to protect and expand said empire.

As to how not escalating the empire's wars of aggression imperils America, as if Iran has readied its vast fleet of war canoes, ready to paddle out of the Straits of Hormuz and make landing on the Manhattan docks at the first sign of weakness, remains unsaid.

yep, it definitely feels like we are sleepwalking into WW3

Insane neocons, delusional, power hungry neocons have no clue what might happen if they succeed in provoking a hot war with Russia and/or China.

The NYT has never seen a war it didn't initially like in my lifetime. They really should change their name to the Empire Times.

Biden doesn't have a foreign policy. Winkin, Blinken and Nod run America's foreign policy along with other dual-citizen neocon and neoliberal lunatics who just can't say 'no,' to a war, any war.

*OT* on Italy and "fascism". The contrasting views of three prominent writers. (I'm with Glenn and Michael on this one.)

"The reason we don’t hear 24/7 media/political alarm about this is that both Italy’s neofascists and Sweden’s neo-Nazi parties (& Spains’s neofascist Vox) are pro-NATO, pro-Ukraine, anti-Russia. Our ruling classes have their priorities, stopping all fascism isn’t one of them." (Mark Ames)

"Italy: holds democratic election, Pundits: this is a frightening blow to democracy." (Michael Tracy)

"It's always been the case, and still very much is, that when Western neoliberals and the US Security State herald the importance of "democracy," what they mean is: "we get the rulers we want." "Fascism" means: they elected someone we dislike, so you must stay united behind us." (Glenn Greenwald)

When and it will be when American neocons overestimate and overstretch their capabilities in a conventional war with China and Russia, rather than admit defeat they will go directly to the nuclear option. There is no other path. Medvedev has actually stated that they reserve the right to go nuclear even if another power attacks Russia with conventional weapons. This trajectory is set. Only a matter of time I'm sad to say. Plus the sabotage of both nord stream pipelines (and the deliberate empoverishment of Europe) most likely by the "west" shows that winning at all costs seems to be the goal.

How can journalists with any conscience at all work for the NY Times?! The article you link to detailing the consistent cheerleading of NYT for Amerika's wars throughout my lifetime is great proof of its complicity in millions of deaths, and your article today is strong and perfect.

I thoroughly enjoy reading Caitlin's writings and the comment section and appreciate how people respectfully disagree and all the information people contribute, though I do not click on links. I do look up some topics and definitions. Thank you all!

I was recently disappointed to learn that Dick Cheney is still alive. I thought he had passed on to the horny guy in the red suit like his friends John McCain and Donald Rumsfeld.

And then I realised that his soul departed from his body many years ago. Any thoughs we might have of lingering humanity in his ageing corpse is an illusion.

Insanity is running rampant in our bureaucratic global system cheered on by a delusional President who’s out to crush anyone who dares signal any disagreement. I disagree starting a war with Russia is sane, I disagree provoking China over Taiwan is sane, I disagree telling everyone they belong to a racial grouping and should blame those successful from other groups for their lack of it, I disagree anything scientific can ever be considered settled like Covid or climate change, I disagree that dangerous criminals are victims, I disagree men have a womb. More human beings need to disagree quickly or Joe is going to destroy the world in order to save it.

Hmm... You'd think the NYT would be more careful with their propagandists and their "hidden connections." AEI and Taiwan seem pretty obvious. Maybe they figure the public is so beaten over the head by propaganda that we're too dizzy to make out who's pushing what agenda and for whom.

I attended grad school with Ms. shake at the U of MD in the 1980s. She was a war-mongering sociopath at the age of 22, and quickly rewarded professionally for such views. Her opportunity to get an op-ed in the NYT is both depressing and predictable.

I wonder if Trump, certainly not perfect in any number of his policies, will ever get credit for not pushing us into another war during his presidency? I always thought the Russia-gate hoax, perpetrated by the democrats and FBI, and God knows who else, was not only to remove Trump from office, an elected president, but to further escalate tensions with Russia which they were hoping to do during "Clinton's rein, which started under Obama in his support for the neo-nazi coup in 2014 which installed a pro western regime. Nuland was with him then, as she is now with Biden. During his presidency and after a televised meeting Thump spoke to the press on camera after all the others participating in the meeting had gone. He talked about our stupid wars that kill millions and cost millions. No wonder the neocons became so loyal to the democrats during his time in office. As Chomsky said during Biden's escalation of tensions with Russia that he thought Trump was the only statesmen who could prevent a war with Russia. As far as the pro-war press goes, well everyone jumped on their anti-Trump bandwagon during his presidency, including many on the left, if not most and gave their total support to the democrats. Now i suppose they have some regrets, but often you wouldn't know it. Now Biden's State Department is filled with those neocons that sent us into our many middle eastern wars.
