I agree that the term 'coup' should not be trivialised. As Caitlyn says,

'A coup attempt doesn't have to be successful for that term to be legitimate, but it does have to have some possibility of success.'

A REAL coup - far larger and more dangerous than we can possibly imagine - is unfolding before our eyes:

Around the world governments are carrying out the orders of the coup leaders:

- Whole populations have been placed under house arrest and/or had their movements restricted by what is effectively martial law

- Hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of small to medium businesses of every sort (incl. e.g. street traders, small farmers, restaurants, any companies with 2 to 200 (or 500?) employees) have been destroyed because the ruling oligarchy wants to replace them all with robotised global monopoly mass production.

- Tens, or hundreds, of millions of people are being made homeless and ruthlessly stripped of everything they own

- Millions of old and otherwise vulnerable people have already been culled, and tens or hundreds of millions of the rest will die in the next year or two (probably from starvation and war).

- Hundreds of millions, soon to be billions, of people are being injected with untested concoctions produced (in feverish-for-profit haste) by corporations and people with alarming histories

- Strident propaganda, continuously escalating censorship, ever improving surveillance and militarised police control have become 'the new normal'

- Humanity is being force-marched into a future dreamed up by the caviar, cocaine, and champagne addled brains of a spoilt, selfish, arrogant, thieving, murderous, parasitic, immoral, unethical, minority who own and control the narrative-, law-, war-, policy-, and product-making corporations and governments.

- The wingnut 'coup' on Capitol Hill was probably the false flag operation that ushers in martial law (and the crushing of the 'left' and 'right' - but mostly the 'left' as the 'right' are always useful) in America. Then there will be no resistance to the feudalism of the future in the world's 'leading' capitalist country - and its army can be used (as always) to enforce / further the Great Reset World Order Build Back Better coup in those parts of the world that dare to resist the omnipotent and omniscient dictates of the Lords of Capital.

- There's more ... but I'm sure you know what I'm on about. This is no joke. Nothing like it has ever happened before. If you think I'm nuts then give us your view of the 'Build Back Better' future that we're being herded into.

Don't despair. And remember: There's always hope in the underground.

Sorry, Caitlin, but this time I disagree with you. Glenn Greenwald has come out with the same denial and I am disappointed in him for doing so. The Democrats are anxious to play the events of 6 January down as much as they can, but it was real. The right-wing wackos had been planning on the Internet for weeks but the police did nothing. The right-wing forces in the police and military deliberately stood down until Mike Pence called in the National Guard. They were incited not just by Trumps speech on 6 January, but by his incitement to violence beginning in his presidential campaign and continuing throughout his entire term in office. One could say that Trump "groomed" them, just the way perverts "groom" their intended underage prey. Five people died. It could have been much worse.

Hitler's "Beer Hall Putsch" didn't amount to much, but a few years later Hindenberg appointed Hitler chancellor and the failed Bavarian artist had his followers already primed and ready.

"Just so we're clear, the policing lesson of the Capitol Hill riots was not that cops should have been more brutal with the Trumpers, it was that they should have been much more restrained during the BLM protests but chose not to be. Don't let them troll you into cheering for police brutality."

Sorry, Caitlin, cops did not "brutalize" BLM rioters. They should have been encouraged to enforce the law by arresting the minority who were attacking them physically while vandalizing, burning property, looting and otherwise contributing to the chaos that left scores of people dead, mostly not killed by cops. They were discouraged and even prohibited from doing their jobs by politicians who favored a "catch and release" policy that allowed the most violent perpetrators to repeat their crimes with impunity. The result? Hundreds of thousands of dollars of burned out businesses owned by and employing blacks and other minorities. It was the 2020 urban renewal program, under the control and supervision of neo-liberal politicians with the goal of creating pre-election chaos and embarrassing Trump with the Hobson's choice of declaring insurrection or looking weak. Wealthy investors will now sweep in and buy the cheap, gutted real estate so they can build high rises. Black and brown communities would be far better off if police had been allowed to crack down on those fascist tools and if politicians had backed police up by denying bail until the situation quieted down.

Instead, an unarmed woman was killed at the Capitol while as you noted the "violent" protesters obediently stayed within the ropes.
