This goes far beyond hyper-nationalistic bloviators like Mr. Cotton. It's part and parcel of the inability/unwillingness to limit the scope of research or at least stringently enforce biosafety requirements. As a molecular biologist, someone might expect me to be gung-ho about pursuing all lines of research in immunology and virology: the free-inquiry version of science. But science within a rapacious capitalist system is science in need of serious regulation, and Mary Shelley was prescient about the inability of humans to exercise restraint; but at least the impacts of her "monster" were far more limited than the potential impacts of careless gof research. In the context of a profit-mad society, gain-of-function (gof) research is driven by Pharma profiteering, despite the fact that there may be individual scientists who are motivated by higher ideals, such as protection of society from infectious diseases. Gof research is incredibly chancy because we tinker with genetic systems whose complexity is as yet barely appreciated by researchers and is mostly opaque to the public and the investor class. It appears operationally impossible to adequately regulate such research, at minimum to ensure that it's done only under BSL3/4 laboratory safeguards. This is a question of scientific ethics, not of nationalism.

Tom Cotton personifies a system which rewards dysfunction, rebranding it into what's called "a serious person, a friend of Israel, and a good God-fearing Christian." Washington swarms with such creatures and there is no systemic alternative. Until we call out and smash this conveyor belt of shite, the road to hell we're travelling should surprise no one.

I think this is the money sentence(s) behind the Wuhan media campaign: "We could for instance work their allies to ensure they're no longer getting sweetheart deals from international financial institutions like the World Bank. We could repeal the permanent most-favored nation status we foolishly gave China 20 years ago. "

The virus was circulating in Italy during the summer of 2019. Hats off to Sky News, but you'll never see this in US corporate media: https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-circulating-in-italy-as-early-as-september-2019-scientists-claim-12133825

Nor do we hear mention anymore of the Wuhan International Military Games held just before an unusual respiratory infection was detected in Wuhan.

Clearly, Covid-19 was circulating widely in the West long before it was ever reported in China, and the military games offered ample opportunity for it to spread from Western athletes to China, which I personally believe is what happened. Whether this was an accident or intended is anybody's guess.

There is absolutely no reason to assume the virus, if it were lab created and already endemic in the West during summer 2019, was not created at Ft. Detrick or UNC. In fact, IMHO the funding for research on bat coronaviruses at Wuhan was a planned "firebreak" so that China could be blamed if a virus, already known to be present in the West, mutated into a more virulent strain. They still want people to believe it was a zoonotic virus that escaped from WIV, but if it has to be conceded that it was probably lab created, WIV's use of that funding for Gain of Function work can be blamed as well, whether or not Fauci or Dazcak are able to evade personal responsibility.

There's only one problem with this scenario: the cat is already out of the bag. That is, the involvement of Fauci and the NIH and UNC and EcoHealth Alliance has been exposed not only by independent journalists but in the mainstream media. Some may choose not to listen, and the powers that be will do all they can to drown it out, but they already lost control of the narrative.

The PCR have already agreed to and engaged in a thorough investigation. Herr Cottons friends have suppressed any investigation of the "soya sauce soldiers",see VT. Glad I'm not a Yank.

There's another way seeing it – don't provoke China, don't do anything unless you really want to stop the rising totalitarianism in the West. The ring is almost closed, just one more winter and its done.

So don't provoke China, unless you want to break it. We could BuBaBe, we could remain testing, locking people down and vaccinating, betting on them forever and forever. Wouldn't it be beautiful?

Because perhaps China is not a sleeping giant, perhaps it could argue eloquently and from the highest pulpits what exactly have been the terms of the deal?
