What might be the single most variable variable is for how long the USA can maintain the dollar as the world's reserve currency, and this got so much more shaky with the abrupt unraveling of the energy industry. America's debt burden is already nearly Japanese in its unsustainability, but if you want to see 'unsustainable' take on a whole new meaning, take away the petrodollar as the reserve currency and watch the ability of Washington to continue borrowing at a mad pace, even though it cannot ever hope to pay most of that money back, evaporate. America's allies pretend its debt is secured, but it isn't - not really. Make it unnecessary for countries to maintain large stocks of dollars in order to trade on the energy market, and it will no longer be possible to pretend.
